Looking for herbal remedies to relieve asthma? Lobelia, ephedra, mullein, chammomile, ginger, coffee, elderberry and hyssop can be used to treat asthma.
Asthma is a disease that causes the airways of the lungs to swell and narrow. As a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, asthma is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, including wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. There are many cures for treating this disorder. The following are eight herbal remedies for asthma cures:
1. Lobelia. Lobelia (Lobelia inflata), also called Indian tobacco, is a genus of flowering plants. It is both a bronchial dilator and antispasmodic that can help reduce dependency on pharmaceutical inhalers. Lobelia has a long history of use as an herbal remedy in traditional medecine for respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, whooping cough, congestion, and bronchitis. Here is a recipe of using lobelia:
– 1/4 teaspoon of dried lobelia inflata
– 1 cup of boiling water
– Put the lobelia inflata in a cup, and pour the boiling water into it
– Let it steep for 10-15 minutes
– Drink, two to three times a day
Please note, there may be health risks associated with lobelia inflata, and care should be taken when using it. Do not take it without consulting with a physician. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have stomach or intestinal issues, or have heart problems, should not take lobelia inflata.
2. Ephedra. Ephedra sinica, known as Ma Huang, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. Ephedra opens bronchial passages, relieves congestion. But American ephedra is a milder bronchial dilator than Chinese ephedra (Ma huang). Traditional uses of ephedra in China are to relieve chills, fevers, coughs and wheezing. It is often combined with other herbs.
Here is a recipe of using ephedra:
– Dried Ephedra sinica 10 grams
– 1 cup of water
– Boil for 5-10 minutes
– Filter out
– Repeat the above process by boiling the herb with 1 cup of water to make the second extract
– Mix two extracts
– Drink half, twice a day
3. Mullein. Mullein is well known as a respiratory tonic. It is anti-spasmodic and antibiotic. It relieves cough, helps clear bronchial tubes. The leaves and flowers activate lymph circulation in the neck and chest. Mullein tones and soothes the mucous membranes, reduces inflammation and encourages healthy fluid production in the lungs. Mullein encourages mucus production, protects the membranes from absorbing allergens and encourages expectoration. Mullein is often used for treating hay fever, emphysema, colds, flu, hoarseness, bronchitis, whooping cough and asthma.
You can find Mullein extract in supplement stores. How to use mullein? You can take it as a tea: add four or five drops to a cup of hot water, then drink it as a tea. This is a traditional cure to treat respiratory problems such as chronic bronchitis, asthma and croup. The tea is soothing to the respiratory system and reduces inflammation and irritation. It is also mildly sedative and can promote sleep and to soothe the nerves.
4. Chammomile Tea is used as an antihistamine. Chammomile (chamomile) is a common relative of ragweed. Chamomile leaves are often used for tea. It is said that chammomile tea helps treat asthma. Please check with your healthcare provider before drinking the tea.
5. Ginger. Ginger is a warming and drying herb. It reduces mucus in lungs and can be used to treat “wet cough”. You can cut 3 slices of fresh ginger, and boil it in a cup of water for 5 minutes, then drink it.

7. Elderberry. Elderberry relieves nasal congestion, flu and cold. You can use the herb to make a syrup. Here is a recipe:
– 1/2 cup dried elderberries
– 3 cups water
– 1 cup honey
– 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
– Put water and dried elderberries in a pot
– Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes
– Strain out the liquid into a bowl
– Add honey and apple cider vinegar to the liquid and stir well
– Place it in a jar and put in the fridge
– Take 1 tablespoon (Adult) or 1 teaspoon (child), 2-3 times a day
8. Hyssop Tea. Hyssop can ease the discomfort of asthma, bronchitis, sore throats, sinus problems, coughs and respiratory congestion. Here is how to use hyssop:
– 2 grams of dried hyssop herb
– 1 cup boiling water
– Steep for 10 minutes
– Drink it, three times daily
