Oyster can be used to relieve irritability, mania, hyperactivity, anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, dizziness, tinnitus, convulsion and spasm.
According to traditional Chinese medical theory, the above disorders are caused by liver-wind, which moves internally. This internal wind stirs, shakes and blows things up and causes the restless, windy and shaking symptoms, such as irritability, mania, hyperactivity, anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, dizziness, tinnitus, convulsion and spasm. To treat these symptoms, Chinese doctors often use oyster shells (Mu Li).
Oyster is a cooling, heavy, sedative and calming medicine in traditional Chinese medicine. It has effects to calm the spirit, treat yang hyperactivity and yin deficiency, calm liver, stop internal wind, and relieve the above symptoms.
Oyster shell is salty in flavor, slightly cold in property, acts on the Liver and Kidney channels. Oyster shell provides a lot of Calcium in a bioavailable form which can dramatically calm down agitation and put you to sleep. Basic functions of oyster shell are to calm the liver and suppress yang, soften hardness to dissipate stagnation, and induce astringency. Main uses of oyster shell include vertigo, tinnitus, palpitation, insomnia, scrofula, goiter and tumor, abdominal mass, spontaneous sweating, night sweat, emission, uterine bleeding, and abnormal vaginal discharge.
Oyster shell (Mu Li) is often used to treat anxiety, restlessness, insomnia in traditional Chinese medicine. It benefits the yin, anchors floating yang and is effective in treating irritability, insomnia, dizziness, headache, tinnitus, blurred vision, bad temper, red flushed face due to yin deficiency with ascending yang. It prevents leakage of fluids, continuous sweating, aftermath of warm-febrile disease, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, nocturnal emission, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea and uterine bleeding. It also softens hardness, dissipates nodules – scrofula and goiter.
Oyster shell is an important mineral sedative in traditional Chinese medicine. It commonly used in in combination with Dragon Bone (Long Gu) in Chinese herbal formulas.
For oral intaking, boil 15-30 grams of oyster shell in water to make a decoction. Drink it, twice a day.
Please note, long-term use or over-dose of oyster shell can cause constipation due to its astringent properties.
