Chyawanprash can be used for treating digestion, constipation, liver, heart, aging and menstruation ailments.

Chyawanprash (chyavanaprasha, chyavanaprash, chyavanaprasam) is an Ayurvedic jelly, a jam-like mixture of herbs, spices, and other ingredients. It is the most popular rejuvenating tonic and widely consumed in India. Chyawanprash is widely used as an energizer and immunity booster, and is said to have numerous nutritional properties.

According to Ayurvedic texts and modern studies, Chyawanprash as a rejuvenative balances three doshas in the body. Its effects include:

– It strengthens digestion, eases constipation and promotes absorption and assimilation of food.
– It gives strength for children, old people, person weakened after illness or accident.
– It increases muscle mass, strengthens bones and teeth, relieves arthritis.
– It purifies blood, eliminates toxins and is beneficial to liver.
– It significantly lowers blood cholestrol and blood pressure, thus beneficial to the heart.
– It works as an antioxidant and a memory booster, increases intelligence, coarseness of speech, is beneficial to the brain cells, thus slowing down the aging process.

Chyawanprash contains about 25 to 80 herbs. Nowadays different companies are making chyavanprash based on their own recipes. the main ingredient of all Chyawanprash is amla (Indian gooseberry, Emblican officinalis), which contains rich natural source of Vitamin C, plus bioflavanoids, anti-oxidants, B complex, and carotenoids. Other ingredients may include ashwagandha, vidarikand or pueraria, pippali or long pepper, white sandalwood, cardamom, tulsi, brahmi, arjun, jatamansi, neem and many other herbs. The herb extracts are combined with ghee, honey, sesame oil and sugar.

Chyawanprash is sold primarily in jars at health supplement shops, Indian markets and ayurvedic herbal stores.

Chyawanprash is a brown-colored, sticky paste. It has the consistency of jam and a sweet, sour and spicy taste. It is recommended to take one teaspoon, once or twice a day. Chyawanprash can be mixed in warm milk or water, or spread onto bread.
