There are six Pippali formulas in traditional Chinese medicine used for treating flatulence, diarrhea, dysentery, dyspepsia, vomiting and nausea caused by coldness, phlegm and weakness.
Pippali (Long pepper, Piper longum) is named “Bi Ba” (荜茇) in traditional Chinese medicine. This Ayurvedic herb has been introduced into China for over one thousand years. In traditional Chinese medicine, pippali is a strong warming herb that has effects to warm up the organs and dispel coldness and phlegm from the digestive system.
Six Pippali Formulas in Traditional Chinese Medicine
The following are six pippali formulas used in traditional Chinese Medicine for treating digestive ailments and other disorders:
1. For treating chest and abdominal pains due to coldness and weakness, diarrhea, hyperhidrosis and dyspepsia
– Pippali 40g;
– Galangal 60g;
– Ginger 60g;
– Cinnamon 40g;
– Make the herbs into powder, and mix well;
– Take 4g of the powder before meal, twice a day.
2. For treating diarrhea, flatulence, distention and dyspepsia
– Pippali 25g;
– Nutmeg 50g;
– Ginger 25g;
– Terminalia Chebula (Haritaki) 50g;
– Atractylodes 1g;
– Licorice 25g;
– Saussurea costus 50g;
– Make the herbs into powder, and mix well;
– Take 3g of the powder before meal, twice a day.
3. For treating flatulence and gas
– Milk 250g;
– Pippali 10g;
– Boil them for 10-15 minutes.
– Drink it before meal.
4. For treating vomiting caused by spleen weakness, heart pain, grayish-yellow face, lower back cold pain
– Each 25g of Pippali, Saussurea costus, Monkshood, Black pepper, Cinnamon, Ginger, and Terminalia Chebula (Haritaki);
– 75g of Magnolia;
– Make the herbs into powder, and mix well;
– Take 3g of the powder before meal, three times a day.
5. For treating weakness and coldness of stomach and spleen, loss of appetite, heavy limbs, distention and lower abdominal pain
– Each 50g of Pippali, Terminalia Chebula (Haritaki), Ginger and Ginseng, and each 25g of Cinnamon, Poria and Black pepper;
– Make the herbs into powder, and mix well;
– Take 4g of the powder before meal.
6. For treating vomiting caused by mucus
– Take Pippali powder 1.5g before meal.
It is recommended to take the powder with rice water – the suspension of starch obtained by draining boiled rice.
