Shatavari is an Ayurvedic female tonic for improving breast milk, infertility, low libido (sex drive), miscarriage and menstrual pain. It is one of the most powerful rejuvenating Indian remedies for women.
Shatavari (Asparagus Racemosus, Satavar, or Shatamull) is a species of asparagus commonly seen in Sri Lanka, India and the Himalayas. It is an Ayurvedic rejuvenating female tonic used as a uterine tonic, a galactogogue (to increase breast milk), an anodyne (pain killer) and an aphrodisiac (to improve sex drive).
Female Tonic for Breast Milk Production
Shatavari is a popular galactogogue. It increases the milk production in lactating mothers. One study found that shatavari “increased the weight of mammary tissue and milk yield in estrogen-primed rats” while inhibiting involution of glandular tissue and maintaining milk secretion. Another study found shatavari to increase milk production in buffaloes. In a recent human study, shatavari seemed no real effect, but the mothers using shatavari had a greater decrease in necessary supplemental milk for their babies at the end of the study than did mothers who took a placebo.
Female Tonic for Women with Low Libido
In Ayurveda, shatavari is a female libido enhancer – an aphrodisiac for women. In Sanskrit, Shatavari means “hundred husbands”. It is said to increase women’s sex drive. Shatavari has strong rejuvenate properties for the female system. It is used in India to rejuvenate female function and treat infertility due to its beneficial effects in women and reproductive function. It enhances circulation and strengthens reproductive system. Shatavari nourishes the overall female reproductive organs, prepares them for conception and treats infertility.
Female Tonic for Miscarriage Prevention
Shatavari is used to prevent miscarriage or premature labor in the Ayurvedic tradition. Premature labor (pre-term labor) is labor that begins more than three weeks before the expected baby delivery (after the 20th week of pregnancy). Pre-term labor may result in the birth of a premature baby. Shatavari is said to prevent some miscarriages and is useful as a post partum tonic. A clinical study, performed in an Ayurveda Hospital, Nepal on the effect of shatavari for Threatened Abortion and High Risk Pregnancy, showed a 90% of the mothers had successful, healthy pregnancies and deliveries when using the herb shatavari. Shatavari is also said to help relieving tiredness and morning sickness.
Female Tonic for Menstrual Pain
Shatavari restores hormonal balance and regular menstruation. It treats PMS symptoms, relieve pain and control blood loss during menstruation. Shatavari helps decrease the inflammation of female sexual organs.
Shatavari is sold in forms of tablets, capsules or powder.
Please note, though shatavari is considered as safe during pregnancy, but some scientists say that shatavari may cause miscarriage because shatavari contracts the uterus firmly. You should consult your doctor before using it.
