As you may know that, due to genetic factors, East Asians are more lactose (and dairy products – milk, butter, cheese) intolerant than Europeans and Indians. For those shepherds in East Asia, such as Tibetans and Mongolians, tea is an essential ingredient to keep them healthy. In ancient times, many wars that the shepherds invaded into inland China – the largest tea producer, just for robbing teas. With the historic experience, when the British came to China in the late eighteenth century, trying to force China to open the door, the Chinese emperor believed that if China stops exporting teas to those foreigners, they all would suffer the health problems, then the enemy will be defeated without a fight.
Though due to the genetic difference, tea may not be so essential to the health of Europeans than to the shepherds in East Asia, but tea is still beneficial to human body. Drinking tea can help reduce the negative effects of dairy products, no matter what genetics you have.
How to make Tibetan butter tea
Ingredients:
– Plain Black Tea 2 bags (or 1 tablespoon of leaves)
– Butter 2 tablespoons
– Salt 1/4 teaspoon
– Milk 1/2 cup or milk powder 1 teaspoon (optional)
– Water 2 cups
Directions:
– Boil tea in water for 1 minute
– Strain
– Pour the boiling tea, salt, (milk) and butter into a blender, blending for 3 minutes or until the butter is melted, and the tea frothy.
– Pour the butter tea into cups and serve
If you do not have a blender, you can use a glass or metal container, such as a bottle or a jar. Just let the hot tea infusion cool down a little bit, pour a little bit infusion into the container, and shake it, let the container “pre warm-up” – This is a very important tip to prevent the glass cracking. After the container is warmed up, pour a cup of tea infusion into the container, and shake it. Repeat the process until all tea infusion is shaked and mixed well with the butter.
Or you can just put butter, salt into a big cup, and pour the boiling tea infusion over it, stiring with a teaspoon or a chopstick until the butter is completely melted.
