Allspice is a native American spice and remedy that can be used to treat toothache, muscle ache, joint pain and bruises.
Allspice (Pimento, Jamaica pepper, myrtle pepper, pimenta, newspice) is the dried unripe fruit of Pimenta dioica, a tree native to America. The taste of allspice is like the combination of the flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg, juniper and cloves. That may explain why its English name is “Allspice”.
Allspice is a cooking spice in native Americans. Today, allspice is one of the most common ingredients of Caribbean cuisine. Allspice is also said to have healing power.
To treat toothache
Allspice can be used to treat toothache. Allspice oil contains eugenol, a chemical that dentists use as a local anesthetic for teeth and gums. Allspice has similar anesthetic effects as clove oil in treating dental pains. But clove oil is more rich in eugenol. That may explain why dentists favor clove oil. But if you do not have clove oil at home, you may use allspice.
– Apply a drop of allspice oil to the affected tooth.
– Or apply a pinch of allspice powder to the painful tooth.
To treat muscle ache, joint pain and bruises
Allspice is an effective pain reliever and anesthetic. It has effects to relieve muscle ache, joint pain and bruises.
– Crushed fresh allspice fruits to make a plaster (poultice), and apply to the affected area. This can help treat bruises, joint and muscle pains.
– Mix allspice powder with water to make a plaster, and apply to the painful area.
– Rub allspice oil to the affected area.
Please note, when using allspice oil for treating toothache, do not swallow it, do not use more than three drops a day. Larger amounts of the pure oil or powder may cause side-effects, such as skin irritation, or nausea.
