Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) has been used as a natural purgative remedy for centuries. Buckthorn bark contains 3 – 7% anthraquinone content. It stimulates the peristaltic movements of the large intestine. That is why the bark has purgative properties and can be used to treat constipation.

Buckthorn bark is a moderate purgative herb. The effect occurs about 6-12 hours after taking the remedy. It can treat chronic and acute constipation. Buckthorn bark also increases the amount of bile. It helps to cleanse the liver, and aids digestive processes. Bile is also a natural laxative which helps cleanse the digestive system. The purgative may also help treat headaches, allergies, hepatitis and skin diseases (acne, allergic eczema, psoriasis, infections) associated with constipation by cleansing toxins in liver and large intestine.

How to use Buckthornbuckthorn

The dried bark of buckthorn is used as a remedy. The berries and the fresh bark are said to be poisonous. The bark for medicinal use should be dried and stored for a year before use. Because fresh bark can cause sever side effects, such as induce vomiting.

Traditionally, the bark is used to make a decoction:

– Dried buckthorn bark 1 teaspoon
– Water 1 cup
– Boil and simmer for 10 minutes
– Drink it before going to bed in the evening because the laxative effect occurs 6-12 hours after taking the tea

You may also make a buckthorn bark tincture:

– Dried buckthorn bark 100g
– Alcohol (35%-80%) 750ml
– Put the bark and alcohol in a container and tighten the cap
– Wait for at least 15 days
– Consume 20ml with 1/2 cup of water in the evening

In the health supplement market, buckthorn is sold as a herbal laxative in capsules and liquid extract. You may find it in a supplement store.

Please note, overdose of buckthorn can cause abdominal pains and vomiting. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not take this herb. You should consult your doctor before using it.
