Swedish bitters is said to have been formulated by physician Paracelsus (1493–1541, born in Switzerland), and rediscovered by Swedish doctors Claus Samst and Urban Hjarne in 18th century.
According to the traditional formula, the main ingredients of Swedish bitters include: aloe, myrrh, saffron, senna leaves, camphor, angelica root, zedvoary root, manna, theriac venezian, carline thistle root and rhubarb root. The method to make the alcoholic tincture is to soak the herbs in grain alcohol for weeks.
In the formula, aloe and rhubarb root have laxative properties and also reduce internal inflammation, therefore relieve constipation and soothe the digestive tract. Myrrh, saffron and angelica root have blood-moving properties, thus stimulate circulation, help treat wounds, bruises, joint pains and high blood pressure. Thistle root is a cooling herb that can reduce inflammation. Aloe and angelica root also help to cleanse liver blood and soothe liver. Myrrh can relieve pains and help treat wounds and joint pains.
Swedish bitters can be used Internally or Externally. For treating constipation, liver disease, high blood pressure, etc, drink 1-2 teaspoons, twice a day. For treating wounds, bruises and joint pains, apply it to the affected area. Drinking Swedish bitters can also help relieve pain and stimulate circulation in treating wounds, bruises and joint pains.
