Chyawanprash is one of the most popular Ayurvedic remedies in India. According to Husaini Ali of Medicinal Medicaments: “Over 50% of total sales of Ayurvedic products in India is Chyawanprash.”
The traditional herbal formula has effects to improve digestion and respiration, calm nervous energy.
Chyawanprash Is The Best Tonic
According to one of the Ayurvedic classics – Charaka Samhita, Chyawanprash is the best tonic, especially good for alleviating cough and asthma; it nourishes the weak, the wounded and the old. Through the use of Chyawanprash, a person acquires intelligence, memory, freedom from disease, longevity, strength of the senses, sexual excitement, great increase of the digestive, improvement of the complexion, and the restoration of dosha balance.
Over time, various formulas for Chyawanprash have been developed from the ancient instructions. Today almost all Ayurvedic manufacturers in India produce Chyawanprash, therefore the composition differs from one brand to another. However, in all brands amla (emblic myrobalans) is the principal component. Other main ingredients include cinnamon, honey, asparagus, turmeric, ashwagandha, etc.
A Formula of Chyawanprash
The following is a formula of Chyawanprash (Universal Medicaments of Nagpur):
– Amla (Emblica officinalis, emblica) 150g;
– Vidarikand (Pueraria tuberosa, pueraria) 12g;
– Pippali (Piper longum, long pepper) 10g;
– Safed Chandan (Santalum album, sandalwood) 8g;
– Elachi (Elletaria cardamom, cardamon) 6g;
– Vasaka (Adulsa, Adhatoda vasica, adhatoda) 5g;
– Akarkara (Anacyclus pyrethrum, anacyclus) 5g;
– Arjun (Terminallia arjuna, arjun) 5g;
– Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera) 5g;
– Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus, asparagus) 5g;
– Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri, bacopa) 5g;
– Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum, basil) 5g;
– Hirda (Terminallia chebula, chebula) 5g;
– Sounth (Zingiber officinale, ginger) 5g;
– Manukka (Vitis vinifera, grape) 5g;
– Yasthimadhu (Mulethi, Glycyrrhiza glabra, licorice) 5g;

Chyawanprash is made from herb extracts, plus small amount of herb powders, and combined in honey which makes up about 3/4 of the weight of the finished product. So the main components of Chyawanprash are emblica and honey.
Chyawanprash is recommended to be taken a teaspoon with a glass of milk after breakfast or dinner.
