Zuojin Wan (左金丸) is a classic formula used for treating acid reflux and heartburn. This Chinese classic herbal formula has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for hundreds of years.
According to TCM, acid reflux and heartburn in most cases is caused by liver fire, which invades the stomach, burns the stomach, causes its over-functioning. So the treatment is to cool down the fire and drive the invader back by lowering the uprising Qi (fire, life force energy).
Zuojin Wan is made of two herbs: coptis and evodia. In the formula, coptis is an extremely bitter-cold herb, which has effects of removing pathogenic fire, and evodia is a warming herb, which has effects to direct uprising Qi downward and relieve the pain. The combination of the two herbs has the effects to cleanse liver fire, regulate liver Qi, soothe stomach and relieve pain.
Here is the formula of Zuojin Wan:
– Coptis (黄连, Rhizoma Coptidis) 180g
– Evodia (吴茱萸, Fructus Evodiae) 30g
– Make them into a fine powder and mix well
– Use the powder to make “water pills” (a Chinese traditional pill processing technique – using water, decoction or other liquid as an adhesive agent that allows the herbal powder to be formed into pills)
– Consume 3-6g, twice a day
