How to treat sinus headache? You can use home remedies, such as peppermint, eucalyptus, mustard, cooling or warming therapies to relieve sinus headaches.
Sinus headache is caused by an inflammation in the sinuses. Sinus headache is characterized by a dull, deep, throbbing pain in the front of the head and face. The pain is worse with sudden movements of the head, and usually worse in the morning.
Sinus headache usually occurs in a cold season. It is rarely seen in a hot summer. And it is worse when sudden temperature changes, like going out into the cold from a warm room, or when having a bad cold. So we can say that sinus headache is a cold-related disease. But sinus headache is caused by an inflammation, which, according to the traditional medical theory, is a symptom caused by the fire, thus it is a fire-related disease.
Since sinus headache is related to coldness and “fire”, therefore, there are two approaches to treat sinus headaches: using warming therapy to expel coldness, or using cooling therapy to reduce inflammation (fire).
Cooling therapy for sinus headache – The cooling therapy is aimed at reducing inflammation by cooling down the part of the body.
1. Apply cold compress (a towel with cold water) to the forehead.
2. Rub peppermint oil (or eucalyptus oil) to the forehead and the area between nose and upper lip.
3. Use peppermint leaves to make a tea, and drink it.
Warming therapy for sinus headache – The warming therapy is aimed at expelling coldness.
1. Eat a chili pepper.
2. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of mustard powder with 3 teaspoons of water, and apply to the nostrils.
3. If you have a bad cold, you may use warming herbs, such as ginger, basil leaves, to make a decoction, and treat your cold. Once your cold is cured, your sinus headache should be relieved.
4. Apply warm compress. Apply a paste made from ginger, mustard, basil leaves, or cinnamon to the forehead.
5. Stay in a warm room, or take a hot bath, or inhale warm steam.
Please note, a natural remedy may be effective to someones, but not to everyone. Please consult a doctor before using the above remedies.
